About half the suppliers agreed to a reduction without any arguments. In the cases where the suppliers would not agree to a lower price, alternative quotes were obtained from other suppliers.

The result was a lower price for every one of the items tackled Services Apart from public services which are discussed later, most businesses employ private contractors to satisfy various needs. These include: Laundry, Roller-towel supplies, Cleaning, Security, Delivery services, Printer/Photocopier maintenance, IT, Mobile Phone contactors and Payroll, etc. In all these cases a representation to the suppliers and/or alternative quotations from competitors can result in savings.

In some cases savings can be made by the use of a little imagination and the goodwill of employees.

Fred was employed by a small company which had .a laundry note too large for comfort. Hearing that arguments were going on with the laundry company, Fred approached the boss and suggested that his wife / partner be offered the laundry contract. The result was cheaper laundry and an employee with additional reason to support and be loyal to his company.

Fred's wife / partner also turned out better work. Check whether such services can be supplied 'in-house'. There may be unemployed or underemployed members of employees' families able and willing to type, clean offices or workshops, carry out maintenance work, and even write programmes for a computer. Your water rates are likely to be linked to other local rates and costs may have no relation to the amount of water used.

Your local water board may allow a charging system based on a metered supply and, if your consumption is small, the result could be a significant saving. A London-based company with offices of about 30,000 square feet were paying £112,000 per month in water rates. Resulting from negotiations with the water board and introduction of a meter, their costs were reduced to £1880 per month. Admittedly, this was a fair-sized office and the reduction in cost was perhaps unusually dramatic, but the story illustrates the possibilities.

Photocopying, Printing and Scanning Modern photocopiers/ printers fall broadly- into two categories, viz. high-speed colour machines and low-speed machines. Both types may have 'additional' features such as collating or double-sided copying, and all are sufficiently expensive to warrant special consideration. The costs of buying, leasing and maintaining the machines will be higher for those with greater speed and those with sophisticated extra features.
