This plan should include: Group and individual meetings with the employees to let them get to know you and you them; Explanations of your ideas and plans and the reasons behind them; Listening to what the employees say about your ideas and giving them every opportunity to' voice their opinions. Since they have been in the business longer than you they can probably tell you many things which make a lot of sense; Consideration for their rights, perks and benefits; Taking things slowly at first and avoiding a great traumatic burst of new methods, rules, etc. unless, of course, you have already found out that a quick change in some respect will positively please employees.

Keep in mind that while a human and considerate approach is definitely best, the business is yours and you must not be seen as a soft touch. Friendly, Fair and Firm is a good motto. Franchising Franchising is growing fast in all Western countries, and offers some definite attractions to the entrepreneur wishing to grow.

The range of businesses being franchised is wide and includes hotels, fast foods, printing, car exhausts, car windscreens and driving schools. The advantages of this method are: The product is normally tried, tested and well advertised; The experience of previous franchisees can be checked to see what level of profit can be expected; Banks and other sources of finance tend to look favourably on requests for loans for a reputable franchise. There are, of course, some disadvantages, and these can only be evaluated by a very careful study of the franchise contract.

The contract will or should spell out the rights and the obligations of the franchisee, and should be thoroughly understood before any agreement is entered into. For example, you may be restricted to buying stock from the franchiser or you may have territorial or other limits imposed on you. You may find the contract terms entirely acceptable, but it is wise to be sure in advance exactly what they are.

There are solicitors with experience of franchise contracts who should be consulted; in addition, information can be obtained from the British Franchising Association (see www.thebfa.org). The British Franchise Association is the only non-statutory self-regulatory body for the UK franchise industry, with a standards focused approach to its membership. Their aim is to promote ethical franchising practice in the United Kingdom and help the UK industry develop credibility, influence and favourable circumstance for growth.

These, then, are some of the ways and means to grow, leaving us with the vital topic of financing.
